UK > Kent

Kent is nicknamed "The Garden of England" as it relies so heavily on its hop fields and apple orchards for its prosperity. Kent has the distinction of being the oldest recorded county name in Britain still in use - Greek and Roman writers mentioned Kention. Its Celtic root canto means an edge or rim describing the counties position in the country. The Romans called the inhabitants Canti. Kent was the first of the dominant Anglo-Saxon England kingdoms. Modern Kent covers 1,440 square miles and has a population of over 1.5 million and has coal mining and cement and paper manufacturing amongst its industrial products. Kents administrative centre is the town of Maidstone.

Traditionally Kents inhabitants are divided into 2 categories, depending where they were born. Those born to the east of the River Medway are known as ''Men of Kent'' whilst those born to the west are known as "Kentish Men". Similarly there are 2 sides to Kent - its fertile rolling hills inland and its coastal towns and ports, which tend to seen as places to pass through en route to the continent rather than attractive places to visit in themselves. Inland, Kent boasts some of England's prettiest villages and some of our most attractive and leafiest countryside. Most of the Weald - the area between the North and South Downs is now designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
